Abstract

Although the term “welfare state” is commonly regarded as a modern concept, its practical foundations were laid centuries earlier in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). This research examines the economic and welfare-oriented dimensions of the Prophetic Seerah through which the Prophet (ﷺ) established a balanced and just economic system in Madinah that guaranteed the dignity, well-being, and financial security of every individual. The Prophet (ﷺ) instituted brotherhood between the Muhajirun and Ansar, organized the system of Bayt al-Mal, implemented zakat and charitable contributions in a systematic manner, and practically worked for the elimination of poverty by encouraging lawful trade, honest labor, and productivity. By promoting economic justice, transparency, and integrity, the Prophet (ﷺ) laid the foundations of a true welfare state that serves as a complete model for the Muslim world today. In the context of rising economic crises and social inequality in the contemporary era, the welfare model derived from the Seerah of the Prophet (ﷺ) is not only worthy of emulation but also offers a practical and sustainable solution. This study presents an analytical review of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) socio-economic measures in the light of Islamic sources and provides crucial recommendations for the development of welfare-based policies in modern Muslim societies.
